If you join us, you will be part of a long tradition of lovers who have celebrated this magical day on our Hampshire estate. Let’s investigate further.

Valentine’s Day, celebrated annually on February 14th, has evolved into a day of romantic gestures and expressions of affection. Its origins, however, trace back to ancient Rome and have evolved over centuries, culminating in the contemporary celebration we know today. While its roots are not specifically tied to the British Isles, its observance here has been notable throughout history.

The earliest origins of Valentine's Day can be traced back to the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, celebrated in mid-February, honouring Lupercus, the Roman god of fertility, and was marked by rituals to ensure health and fertility. The Christian church later sought to Christianise the pagan festival by associating it with St. Valentine, a third-century Roman saint.

The celebration of Valentine's Day as a day of romance gained popularity in Britain during the Middle Ages, and we can be sure that there were many occasions celebrated right here at The Elvetham since our estate was founded before 1066. We know for sure that love blossomed in October 1535 when Henry VIII stayed with the Seymour family at The Elvetham, marking the beginning of love between the King and his future queen Jane Seymour. Betrothed in May the following year, we can be sure that Henry must have at least sent some flowers on Valentine’s Day 1535, don’t you think?

Today, Valentine's Day is marked by various customs, including the exchange of cards, flowers, chocolates, and romantic dinners. While some critics dismiss it as a commercialised holiday, many still cherish the opportunity to express their love and appreciation for their partners, friends, and family members. Its origins may be rooted in antiquity, but its enduring appeal lies in its celebration of love and affection in all its forms. So come, join us, and let us celebrate another Valentine’s Day at The Elvetham.
